Japanese woodblock is a technique rich in tradition dating back to the 17th century. Ukiyo-e means “pictures of a floating world” because these prints depict all parts of daily life.  We will be carving wood blocks and inking them with watercolors and nori paste to create painterly gradations of color called bokashi.  Students will have the opportunity to create two and three color prints and to experiment with Japanese papers. This non-toxic print medium is colorful and subtle and allows for beautiful transparent washes of color as well as detailed textures and wood grain, all of which make for unique imagery.

We will explore this vibrant medium and look at the work of Hokusai and Hiroshige as well as contemporary printmakers. As a class we will also have the opportunity to visit the Japanese Print show at Highfield Hall in Falmouth with a docent tour of the show.

In this three-day course students will be able to create a 7” X 9” print in two to three colors. Students should bring photos, books, sketches and design ideas for your woodblock prints.

Material Fee: $30 due to instructor on first day of class.

All supplies are provided, including carving tools.
